News from the Natural World: Destroying nature has led humans into a global Pandemic but only destroying more nature can lead them out.
The deadly viral Pandemic of COVID-19 is currently ravaging the human world. In addition to rupturing human economies, it has also forced governments to lockdown entire countries. At least 1 million humans have died. One thing is clear though, how did the Pandemic happen? This coronavirus is a direct result of humans destruction of the natural world, according to leaders at the human UN & WHO. The illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade, as well as the devastation of forests and other wild places, are the driving forces behind the increasing number of diseases leaping from wildlife to humans. But the human world has been ignoring this stark reality for decades.
In fact not only is the human world ignoring that destroying nature led to the Pandemic, it now has another trick up its sleeve. Only by destroying even more nature can humans expect to save themselves. In a bid to find a COVID-19 vaccine humans will kill half a million sharks. This is because a natural oil called Squalene is found in the liver of sharks. This is used as a medicine and is also used as an adjuvant to increase the effectiveness of a vaccine. If a trial vaccine passes that contains squalene and goes into production across the world then around 250,000 sharks will need to be slaughtered to provide one dose for each person. That figure doubles and becomes direr if people need two shots instead of one to fully vaccinate against Covid-19.
