Number 33 – Rodrigue Mugaruka Katembo
Rodrigue Mugaruka Katembo is a park ranger from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He was one of the winners of the 2017 Goldman Environmental Prize for his work protecting Virunga National Park. Katembo risked his life to uncover corruption in the attempts by SOCO International to drill for oil in the park. Since then he lives in constant fear of attack for protecting wildlife in Virunga National Park but has never wavered in his fight. The former child soldier recently told the BBC how he has to live away from his family, for their own safety. He is a true conservation warrior and the western world would do well to recognise his dedication and talents, like those of many who work alongside him. We find no greater sacrifice than the willingness to lay down your life in the fight to protect an animal.
