Number 47 – Purnima Devi Barman
Dr. Purnima Devi Barman is a conservation biologist with the NGO, Aaranyak, in Assam. Purnima is the recipient of Whitley Award 2017 for her crusading conservation movement to protect the highly endangered Greater Adjutant Stork. Purnima has also been conferred with Nari Shakti Purashkar by the President of India which is the highest civilian award for Indian women. But enough of those awards, she has also been tirelessly working with communities and conducting research on the storks for the last 12 years. In addition, Purnima is the founder of a group called “Hargila army” (voice of rural women as the protector of trees) and has organized over 200 local women into the “Hargila Army” to implement Hargila conservation. Her work has given the communities a voice and she has set up a model for community conservation by building strong ownership. Purnima is an inspiration to all around her and continues to fight to protect the environment which she loves so dearly.
