Number 6 – The Real Manatee Man
At 11 years old, Jamal Galves knew that manatees would be his life. As a child playing on the lawn of his grandparent’s house, he would watch their hulking figures float by, imitating the researchers who trailed behind them. He saw them tagging the massive grey animals, drawing blood samples and even recording their every exhale. Since then, Galves, now aptly known as “the manatee man,” has made manatees his life. He is saving Belize’s Manatees, one baby, at time. He has now joined the Belize Manatee Project as a program Coordinator in his home village of Gales Point. He is still, in his own words, “just that kid trying to save manatees.”
For his grassroots activism and focusing on the most impactful changes he could make for animals in his local area we salute the Manatee Man!
