News from the Natural World: Top 50 Humans of the Year - the list is finally in and the animals have agreed on this years, Top 50 Humans.

Number 1 – Innocent Mburanumwe

Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo

Finally, here we are, the Number 1 Top Human of the Year goes to Innocent Mburanumwe. Innocent is the Deputy Chief Ranger for Virunga National Park, the home to Mountain Gorillas. He has dedicated his entire life to looking after these critically endangered animals after being inspired by his father, brother and uncle who were all also rangers. An entire family bonded by their sacrifice for mother earth. But Innocents year has been wracked by tragedy. The whole human and animal world was left in tears after the park ranger recalled the heartbreaking moment his brother died whilst fighting to protect mountain gorillas. There is truly no greater sacrifice in the fight to protect the natural world.

“I lost one of my family, my brother was killed in the line of duty”

Innocent’s brother was one of more than 180 rangers that have died in the fight to save the Mountain Gorillas. But Innocent has not been perturbed from his path and vows to fight on to protect the animals and land that he loves. He is directly putting his life on the line to save critically endangered animals and we can think of no human more deserving than him for the top spot on the list. We dedicate his award to his brother and the 180 park rangers who laid down their lives to protect Mountain Gorillas.
