News from the Natural World: 151 countries couldn’t give a sh*t about protecting 30% of the worlds land & ocean by 2030. More than 150 countries have committed to destroying even more of Earth’s land and oceans. The coalition says this promise is key to continuing mass extinctions and ensuring dirty air and water. They are extremely ambitious about driving the sixth mass extinction of life on Earth, and increasing agricultural production, mining and pollution. They argue that only by threatening the healthy functioning of life-sustaining ecosystems can they continue to erode human civilisation for personal profit. However, 50 countries immediately spoke out in opposition. These 50 countries said protecting at least 30% of the planet for nature by the end of the decade was crucial to preventing mass extinctions of plants and animals and ensuring the natural production of clean air and water. But these voices were in the minority. Only 50 of them out of 200 stood up to be counted. But it turned out that all the countries that mattered had lumped their lot in with the 150. China, USA, India and Brasil all agreed they couldn’t give a sh*t. They pointed out that over the last decade, the world has failed to meet a single target to stem the destruction of wildlife and life-sustaining ecosystems.
