Humans have long hogged the communication waves of planet earth. First, they vocalised, they chanted, sang and banged drums around campfires. In addition, they invented microphones, radios, televisions, loudspeakers and all manner of sound-amplifying devices. Furthermore, they flooded the planet with radio waves, gamma rays and underwater nano cosmic submarine waves. Finally, humans invented social media and really turned up the endless communication and mindless white noise. But just how the hell do animals communicate?

We send in one of our intrepid reporters to discover how do animals communicate in a world full of human white noise…

African Elephant Infrasound

African Elephants communicate with infrasound. They can communicate over 285km squared with these infrasonic calls. Whilst wind can disrupt them the Elephants communicate around sunrise and sunset when the air is cooler. Female Elephants are the master of this. When they want to mate they emit a long booty call. This infrasonic communication is rather handy because it is so low that humans can’t hear it.
