News from the Natural World: Humans have only lost the annual worst species on the planet award a handful of times, we find out why?
The annual worst species on the planet award is one of the biggest and most loved awards ceremonies in the animal kingdom. Every year animals gather to declare the worst species. Humans have won the award for worst species almost exclusively for the last 15,000 years. This point marks the exact start of the Agricultural Revolution. The agricultural revolution is the name given to a number of cultural transformations that initially allowed humans to change from a hunting and gathering subsistence to one of agriculture and animal domestication. Since that point, humans have been the earths, preeminent ultra bastards.
But on 5 occasions the humans have been usurped and another animal has been crowned the worst species. We explore the only 5 times in the last 15,000 years that humans have lost.
The Year 1346 – The Rat
In 1346 the Rat was crowned the worst species of the year. This was due to causing the Black Death which littered the world with millions of bloated and rotting human corpses. The stench was unbearable and all animals agreed that whilst hating the humans the Rats had gone a bit far on this one.
