News from the Natural World: Cat on vegan diet turns to simple tactic to thwart owners smugness.

Humans are strange animals. Like no other creature in the animal kingdom they are a walking contradiction. They have the ability to do things one way and say things in completely the opposite direction. It actually seems that the bigger the hypocrite the louder the voice. This is true for almost all humans. One such group is called Vegans. Vegans have started to put their cats on vegan diets because they argue that all animals are sentient beings and as such, they shouldn’t be eaten, even by another animal like a cat. Hang on a minute. If animals are sentient beings then why is it ok to own them as pets? Or as wild animals call them ‘slaves’. Own them don’t eat them. Seems rather hypocritical, doesn’t it. Anyway, let’s breeze past that and get to the meaty part of the issue (apologies I couldn’t resist). Is it ok to feed a cat a vegan diet?

Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they must eat meat to survive. You don’t have to throw your kitty a raw steak every night for dinner, but meat products must make up the majority of her diet, whether dry kibble, canned food, or a combination. Here are three reasons why Cats need meat in their diet. As obligate carnivores, Cats get their glucose from the protein they eat, while omnivores get glucose from breaking down carbohydrates. If a Cat is fed a vegetarian-based diet, its body will begin breaking down its own muscles and organs for energy. In addition, the digestive tract is shorter in Cats than in most mammals. Furthermore, Cats can’t produce all their own nutrients. But we didn’t stop there, we decided to interview a Cat to find out what they felt about being on a vegan diet;

“You know it wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the smug smile on my human’s face every time it dribbles some plant-based nonsense into my bowl. I’ve started eating it just to shut him up if I’m being honest. It tastes minging but I’d rather just get it over and done with. I explained to my human that cats are obligate carnivores and if they can’t face feeding me the right food maybe they shouldn’t own a Cat. But these humans man, you know what they are like, hypocrites on hypocrites.”
