Brenda was a Battery Farm Chicken. For her entire life, she had not once glimpsed the sun or felt the wind in her feathers. She knew not the fresh taste of morning air nor the feeling of wet grass after the first rains of summer. This was all because she lived on. battery farm. Battery hens are egg-laying hens that are kept in battery cages. In these traditional battery cages, one hen was kept in one cage and these cages were kept together, often in long rows. The term battery simply means an arrangement of rows and columns of identical cages connected together in a unit.

It was in these conditions that Brenda had lived her entire life. We decided to interview Brenda to find out how things were;

“They couldn’t be worse, to be honest. It’s just horrendous. It’s like a living hell really. Us women are the unlucky ones. I’ve seen all the male chickens get separated at birth. They’re clearly off to somewhere better on that big conveyor belt to those crushing jaws. It’s clearly some kind of heaven, it surely couldn’t be worse than I’ve got it. Here let me give you a little insider’s tour of my life in hell, or as we call it, life on a battery farm.

“Battery cages present inherent problems, most notably their bloody tiny and proper barren conditions. We’re unable to engage in many of our natural behaviors and endure high levels of stress and frustration.”
